What to Know Before You Buy Drums What You Should Know Before Buying Drums ChaptersDifferent Types of DrumsWhat Are the Best Drumsticks? What Are the Best Drum Kits to Buy?How Much Does a Drum Kit Cost? How to Tune a Drum KitA Guide to Drum Kit MaintenanceMaybe you were one of the lucky ones who got to see Rush in concert before Neil Peart retired.Or perhaps you’ve read the discussion boards of whether Lars Ullrich is or is not a good drummer. It could be that you or someone you know is taking drum lessons! In any of these cases, your fascination with percussion is evident. What Superprof is going to do is feed it a meal of facts, figures and fabled drummers, all with the intent to help you finally get the kit you’ve always dreamed of.Do you have a concrete idea of the kit you want? Then maybe Superprof can help you flesh out your drum set; maybe with eclectic percussion instruments or perhaps by helping you choose the right stick.drum mimics human speech.Gongs of AsiaIn Asia is where the cymbal came to prominence. Sure, they had their drums: war drums in Ch ina, ceremonial drums in Japan...You might say that the drums complement the cymbals! Or is it the other way around...?Either way, gongs and cymbals take centre stage in traditional Asian music.Today, the Asian influence prevails in the name of the Big Three cymbal companies, all of which originated in Asia:Zildjian â€" over 400 years in the business!Sabian: an offshoot of Zildjian, founded in Canada by the brother of Armand, who became CEO of the companyRobert nevertheless made use of the Zildjian technique for cymbal-making!Paiste: an Indo-European company founded in EstoniaAnd, of course, some of the finest cymbals on the market, the Istanbul Mehmets, are made in Turkey!Naturally, we have to include Meinl in the big cymbal names, but this company got its start less than 100 years ago, in Germany.Drumming in EuropeThe art of drumming remained essentially unchanged for over a thousand years until the snare drum was created in the 15th century. Its use, particularly by the military, revolutionised drum making and drum playing!Drum rudiments, the paradiddle and the drag among them, seem to have developed with the snare drum.As military campaigns became further-reaching, so too did the influence of snare drums, until they became ubiquitous.Today, they are essential for any jazz, rock or marching band! What are you going to beat yours with? The type of drumstick you play with will affect your sound and your playing Source: Pixabay Credit: PexelsWhat Are the Best Drumsticks?Categorising anything as best is, in principle, a subjective affair. And when it comes to drumsticks... so many variables go into the choice of sticks you use to beat your kit with! What type of music do you play? What level player are you: beginner, intermediate... advanced? What size are you? â€" nothing implied in that question; stick diameter and weight is important in selecting the right stickWhat sound are you looking for? What kind of kit do you have?A good drummer would have a stick bag replete with an assortment of drumsticks: oval heads and round ones; teardrop-shaped and barrel-shaped. Nylon-coated or pure wood...Each of these tips, along with the anatomy of the drumstick will affect what sound your drums make and how they respond to your playing.Furthermore: most sticks are made of either hickory wood, oak or maple; each type of wood brings its own properties to your sound. You can drum quickly with maple sticks because they are light, but they would not stand up to heavy rock drumming, for example. The rule of thumb for beginners is to learn to play with a set of 5A hickory sticks. They are of average weight and mid-sized diameter, and absorb vibration well. From there, you may opt to go for a heavier stick or one made out of nylon-coated graphite â€" a much lighter material that helps forestall fatigue. And then, you might experiment with brushes and mallets, just to see what kind of sound you can coax from your kit!time and patience. While some instrument techs advocate tuning your snare and bass drum first and then ranging the toms within that pitch spectrum, others insist you should start with the smallest drum and work your way through the sizes, finishing with the kick drum.Either way, you will start with your snare! One important distinction between tuning this drum and the rest of your kit is that you will tune the batter head first, and then the resonant head. With the other drums, that order is reversed. When tuning your drums, remember that you are tuning the heads to the tone and pitch of the shell â€" see what we mean by needing a good ear?You should tap the side of the drum with a stick as often as necessary to internalise its tone, and then, using the drum key, turn the tension rods in quarter-turn increments until the drum head makes a complementary sound.Always remember to work diagonally: work with the tension rod closest to you first, and then the one opposite to it.Never travel the circumference of the drum, loosening or tightening as you go, unless you are replacing the drum head! The best drummers agree that you should tune your drums before you play them, whenever there is a change in condition â€" from hot to cold or after they travel; and whenever you change the drum head.In fact, tuning should be a part of your regular drum maintenance!A drum key is vital to the proper tuning of your drums! Definition of Coordinate

Definition of Coordinate Definition of coordinate is an introduction to coordinate geometry. In geometry the position of any point on a plane is described by pair of numbers called ordered pairs. The coordinate plain is given below. It has two lines perpendicular to each other. In the plane, the horizontal line is x-axis and vertical line is y-axis. The point where both the axis crosses is the origin and it is the point where x and y remains zero. In x-axis, the values to the right of origin are positive and to left are negative. In y axis, the values above the origin are positive and below the origin are negative. The below 2 examples show you how to plot a point in graph. Example 1: Plot the point (3, -6) on graph Solution: The center point is the origin and it is written as point (0, 0) because both x and y are zero at this point. = From the given point (3, -6) = X is positive 3 and y is -6 = So move 3 units to the right on x axis and 6 units down on y axis = (3, -6) is the point where it meets. Example 2: Find location of point on graph? Solution: Start from origin = Draw lines from the point that cuts x axis and y axis respectively. = Since, the line cuts at point 3 on x axis and at point 4 on y axis. = Therefore x= 3 and y=4 = So, the point shown in graph is (3, 4)

Harvard University A Student Interview

Harvard University A Student Interview The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teachtheyre sharing their college experiences as well. Keena is a Chicago tutor and 2006 graduate of Harvard University, where she studied psychology. She specializes in math tutoring, psychology tutoring, and a number of other subjects. See what she had to share about her time at Harvard University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Keena: Harvard University is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which is really just a smaller part of Boston. The campus is pretty urban, but borders on residential areas which makes it feel a bit quieter and more neighborhood-y on the edges (I always liked this part because there were lots of people walking dogs, and I missed mine). Harvard has a shuttle bus that can transport students to and from various parts of the campus. The shuttle is a great option for students, since the campus itself is huge and it can take a long time to walk from one side to the other especially if you include the athletic facilities and graduate education buildings. A bike is also a good idea but be careful! Cambridge is known as the bike theft capital of the country and given the number of thefts Ive seen on campus, I believe it. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Keena: The professors, academic advisors, and teaching assistants make themselves fairly available, but its important to remember that they are all involved in their own research or professional projects and often its difficult to get on their schedules. Sign up early, and make sure you know what youre going to talk about when you go to office hours. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Keena: The Houses at Harvard are one of the best parts of the University, in my opinion. Each House has its own personality and traditions, and being part of such a vibrant mini-community in the University has a very humanizing effect, especially since Harvard can be a cold and intense place at times. The Houses each have a dining hall and host various social activities for both house members and visitors, and it can be great to go from House to House experiencing the different atmospheres. I think its extremely important to take time to build a social network and put down your work for a while, especially at a place thats as academically intense as Harvard is. Youre supposed to be having fun, too! Which majors/programs are best represented and supported at Harvard University? Keena: Im not sure I can speak to which programs are best represented and supported I do know that a lot of students come to Harvard and dive into a particular field without giving themselves the freedom to experience new fields, which I think is a big mistake. As an example, I started school thinking I wanted to be pre-med, but switched out of that track midway through my sophomore year because I didnt like organic chemistry. I graduated with a degree in social psychology, but if you asked me now what I would have done in retrospect, I would have chosen history or creative writing, since thats what I liked the best. Its incredibly important to take classes in new fields and focus on what you really enjoy doing, not just what you or someone else thinks you should be doing. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Keena: It was easy for me to make friends as a freshman. Harvard offers incoming freshmen the chance to go on a hiking trip with other new students before classes start (its called the Freshman Outdoor Program, or FOP) and it was through FOP that I met some of my best friends, friends I am still close with today. There are a lot of socialization opportunities within the dorms as well, and each entryway has two Prefects assigned to it upperclassmen who host weekly social activities with their freshmen, to help them make friends and integrate into the community. Greek life plays a pretty minimal role on campus; there are a handful of fraternities and sororities around, but they dont have houses and operate completely independently from the University itself. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Keena: I dont remember the Career Center being particularly helpful. I do remember a lot of huge companies recruiting on campus my senior year, mostly through dinners and social events designed to show students how fancy their lives could be after graduation. Some of my friends went this route, and had good experiences. For me, finding professors in fields I liked and who I could connect with gave me the most insight into what I wanted to do after school. Harvard is a big place, but finding upperclassmen and professors who you can connect with can help a lot in figuring out what you want to do. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges at Harvard University? Keena: The libraries at Harvard are the coolest. There are two main libraries (though I read somewhere that Harvard has more than 90 in total across various campuses): Widener (absolutely massive), and Lamont (smaller, more Undergraduate-focused). Widener is a lot of fun to explore, and there are many little nooks and crannies for students to hole up in for hours at a time to do work. Lamont is more social and feels warmer since its a bit smaller and has big, public study spaces. I studied at both and really liked having the opportunity to work in such interesting and well-designed spaces. They are both easily available. Describe the surrounding town. Keena: Cambridge is a very interesting town. There are a lot of stores, restaurants, and bars, and it feels urban but without the size of downtown Boston. A lot of establishments have been in the same place for decades, so its always possible to go back to your favorite haunts when you visit. Most undergraduates will tell you that the Kong is a perennial favorite among the students, though I also enjoyed going to Graftons, Cambridge Common, and Pinocchios Pizzeria. Its very easy to take the T to downtown Boston, though most students stay near campus since there is so much to do. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Keena: The student body felt big to me, though in reality the undergraduate enrollment is only around 7,000 students. Many of the introductory lecture classes are very large, but these always include smaller group sessions made up of 8-12 students with a Teaching Assistant. The smaller lecture classes are often between 10 and 30 students, though you are able to find classes with only a few students in some of the smaller fields. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Keena: Harvard is famous for its Human Sexuality class in the Psychology department. This class covers a wide variety of topics from sexual orientation and gender identity, to societal views of sexuality and sexuality in the media. Its an extremely popular class and was one of my favorites. The lectures were often so thought provoking that my friends and I would go out after class and spend hours talking about what we learned in class and how we felt about it. I would highly recommend every student taking this class if they can. In terms of regrets I regret taking too many classes that I thought I had to take (conceptual mathematics, organic chemistry, etc.) instead of classes I wanted to take. I didnt realize the freedom I had to dictate my own curriculum, and I wish I had figured that out earlier in my undergraduate career. Check out Keenas tutoring profile. There are plenty of places offering ballet lessons and workshops. You just need to choose the one that teaches ballet classes for your level.Getting Ballet Lessons at a Conservatoire or UniversityYou become a ballet dancer at any age. (Source: Skitterphoto)Can you get “adult ballet classes”?Even for beginners?Of course, you can! Not everyone attending a conservatoire aspires to be a famous dancer. Most people wrongly assume that if you want to attend adult ballet classes, you have to be a ballet dancer at a dance company or preparing for an audition.Of course, conservatoires do tend to produce some of the best dancers in the country. However, not every famous dancer attended a conservatoire and not all the alumni of conservatoires are famous dancers. However, to get on a lot of the courses at a conservatoire, you'll have to have some experience with dance classes and an understanding of ballet technique.  That said, if you do decide to enrol at a conservatoire, it's because you want a career in the arts.Find dance classes in London.Picking a Ballet Teacher from a Dance SchoolIf you want to start learning how to dance, think about having a look at the dance schools in your region. The teachers at these schools are often experienced and offer quality lessons. These lessons can be rather pricey depending on the dance school you choose to attend but they often also come with some of the best equipment. However, not every dance studio is the same.  Many of them also offer drop-in lessons and ballet lessons. Not know the first thing about dancing?Don’t worry! You can always attend recreational ballet lessons for “absolute beginners”.If you want to master advanced techniques, you're going to have to work hard. (Source: roxanablav)Since ballet can be quite technical, a beginner ballet class usually assumes that you've been shown the fundamentals of the discipline. When first beginning ballet lessons, you'll usually start with “absolute beginners” that will introduce you to ballet before moving onto “beginners”, “intermediate”, and then “advanced” classes.Once you start mastering ballet, you can focus on the specific aspects of your dance training with classes with an emphasis on things like pointe technique or physical strengthening and co nditioning.Make sure to check out the school's syllabus or curriculum before you sign up to participate in their adult dance programmes.Get Private Ballet LessonsAre you a bit shy in class?Would you like to learn more quickly than you would in a traditional group class? Are you getting ready for a dance competition or exam? You should check out private ballet tutorials!Private tuition is also useful for those who'd struggle with the class schedule at a ballet studio or a dance classes near me that's taught at the same time every week. With a private tutor, you and your instructor can decide where and when you get your dance training.Whether advertised on a bulletin board in the supermarket, Facebook pages, or on specialised platforms like Superprof, there are plenty of ways to find and get in touch with private ballet tutors or other dance tutors. There are plenty of dance tutors from all around the country on Superprof. Some tutors charge very little but may not have a lot of experien ce. Experienced tutors may provide the best education but come at a cost. The rates of tutors can vary wildly between £15 to £60 per hour and change depending on where the tutor is, your level, the tutor’s experience, and the type of ballet tutorials that you’re looking for.Private tutorials are also useful for those who need to prepare for a show. If you've got rehearsal for the Nutcracker or Swan Lake and feel that you should brush up on your ballet pointe technique or just want to broaden your repertoire before you start your placement at an academy of dance, your tutor can focus on what you need to improve far more than you could in your typical adult class. The Questions You Need to Ask Your Potential Dance TeacherBefore you choose your dance teacher or dance academy, you have to ask a few questions.Make sure they have the necessary qualifications. A good dancer isn’t necessarily a good teacher, so make sure that they have qualifications and experience in teaching. Gener ally, the teacher should have at least a level 3 qualification (A Level or equivalent) in dancing.People tend to think that ballet lessons are expensive. You should make sure that you do your research on the cost before you start aspiring to be the next George Balanchine, the man who founded the New York City Ballet where he was the Artistic Director for many years a.k.a. the father of American Ballet. In some cases, you can pay every month, semester, or year to make things easier. You can pay for several lessons at once at some of the more modern dance schools. This means you can show up to several different dance classes and try them out. Some places even offer discounts for students, job seekers, senior citizens, or just for signing up several family members or friends at the same school. What does the ideal ballet tutor look like? (Source: creades)When you sign up, you might be asked a few questions about your health and fitness just to make sure that you won’t injure yourself du ring lessons. This is often a legal requirement. You’ll also be expected to provide general information like your name, address, telephone number, etc. Some ballet teachers may even expect you to wear specific clothes for their lessons. Make sure you find out if they do and, if so, what they are. Otherwise, you should get a leotard, tights or leggings, ballet shoes, and make sure you tie your hair up. Don’t wear anything that could hinder your movements. It’s common for schools to offer free taster sessions for the first class of the year. This is useful for helping you decide whether or not the course is for you. You should focus on the teaching style and how they structure their lesson.A lot of schools also put on an end of year show to show off what their students are capable of. However, this may mean that a student has to pay more. Make sure you find out if they do and, if so, how much it would cost.  Go see this show to see if it seems like the type of school you’d like to attend and check out the students’ level, etc. These shows often take place in the summer. What You Should Look for in a Ballet TeacherTaster sessions and classes are a great opportunity to look out for the qualities your tutor should have:It can take a while to get this flexible. (Source: studioessen)Teaching skills: A good dancer isn’t necessarily a good teacher. They need to be able to clearly break down each steps so that everyone understands them. They also need to be able to adapt to each student’s needs. The choreography needs to be suitable for the level: It’s normal not to be able to follow along with the choreography if you’ve never danced before, but you should look at the other students. If nobody seems to be getting it then the routine may be too advanced for the students and this is a sign that the teacher isn’t capable of adapting their classes. On the other hand, if the moves all seem too easy for the students, it can also be a bad thing.Patience and car e: Learning to dance can take some time. A ballet teacher should never forget to be patient and care about their students. They need to correct their students’ mistakes and encourage their student to improve. A good teacher is nurturing and encouraging.Motivating students:  When an exercise is done right, a good tutor should congratulate their students. They know how to motivate their students when they have doubts. A good teacher is also like a coach. They respect the limits of each student, especially in terms of flexibility:  Flexibility is one of the fundamentals of ballet. However, not everyone’s the same, and that’s alright. None of the exercises should harm you. Every exercise needs to be done with the physical abilities of the student. The time spent warming up:  To avoid injuries, warming up needs to take a certain amount of time, especially when it comes to ballet. Before any exercises are done with the ballet barre, you should be encouraged to warm up and make sure th at you stretch sufficiently.Technical and artistic skills: a ballet teacher should make you want to dance like them. Otherwise, why should you even pick them to be your teacher? Whether it’s their improvisation or how they perfectly execute a pas de deux and an entrechat, they have to impress you. Additionally, you may have to pay attention to the type of ballet. You don't want to focus on classical ballet with a ballerina who's dance training focused on contemporary ballet. In short:Choose where you’d like to take ballet lessons: conservatoires, dance schools, ballet academies, dance studios, or with a private tutor.Ask your potential teacher some questions about the cost, timetable, clothing, their qualifications, etc. Were they a professional dancer? Do they have experience as a choreographer at a national ballet company? Have they taught or studied at a ballet academy?Research your potential teacher’s skills and qualities: teaching skills, abilities, confidence, personality , etc.So what are you waiting for? Get your ballet slippers and tutu ready!Don't forget that on Superprof you can also find a trained tutor who teaches jazz, tap, pilates, or contemporary dance for adults. To learn about the history of ballet, follow the link!

The New SAT and AJ Tutoring Our Students Key Takeaways From Test-Day

The New SAT and AJ Tutoring Our Students Key Takeaways From Test-Day Now that the new SATs first administration is in the books, we at AJ Tutoring were curious to find out what our students thought about the test, whether they felt prepared (the answer was yes!), and what AJ can focus on to ensure student success on future SATs. What did we learn about how to conquer the new SAT? It’s simple: prepare, prepare, prepare. The test is easily coachable.Upon the first administration of the new SAT, students found that the content was predictable and that the methods they had learned made it possible to maximize the number of questions they answered correctly. Many of our students found that the one-on-one practice they had in their tutoring sessions gave them the feedback and exposure that they needed to be able to adeptly refine and adjust their approach to individual sections, as well as the test as a whole. What about the Content?MathMost students indicated the no-calculator Math section was the most difficult (and more challenging than previously relea sed materials). Students reported trigonometry questions, questions involving complex numbers, and even one challenging 7-24-25 Pythagorean triple. However, as one student stated: “I thought Math was approachable because I knew that the content covered was limited in scope. Also, knowing SOH-CAH-TOA, special right triangles, and how to use a calculator really helped. I could always get started.”Reading Comprehension Literal, not LiteraryStudents reported the highest alignment in Reading Comprehension (though students did say they felt very tired by the end of the 65-minute section). Some students did find a set of paired passages as we expected. Other passages included important historical figures and covered a wide range of topics across the fields of science, medicine, geography, and the arts and humanities. There was a letter by the 1960s labor activist Cesar Chavez, a passage from a Michael Chabon novel, an essay on baby fat (students reported this was by far “the weirdes t” content on the exam), and an essay on plate tectonics.WritingMost students shared that the Writing section, which primarily tests grammar, was easy.EssayAs for the Analytical Essay, at least some of the tests included a source text taken from an article written by E. J. Dionne, Jr. entitled A Call for National Service. The full article was originally published in the Washington Post in 2013.Were there any Surprises?Students sharing their test-day experiences with peers were surprised to find their friends had taken a completely different exam; there were confirmed multiple versions of the test administered on March 5th. The reasoning for this is most likely that the College Board needs to pretest as many questions as possible to satiate the appetites of students hungry for more practice materials than are currently available.Just as we had anticipated, there was an experimental section for most test-takers. Theres an amusing anecdote being shared by students in several states i n which the proctor began to read a script that indicated test-takers would now be taking a 20-minute variable section, only to realize the group was taking the optional essay instead. For the first instance of this reformatted exam, some proctors clearly had confusion and adjustments to navigate as well. This also clarifies that the College Board did have an experimental section up its sleeve, despite some indications (and even a few outright denials) to the contrary. Students in some schools have reported taking a fifth section of the exam, which was referred to as a variable section. As is always the case, opinions varied on the difficulty of the exam, and many students were left wondering how the new test will be scaled. Virtually all students expressed concern that they would not have their scores until after the May SAT date had already passed.Closing ThoughtsAs we wait for scores to be released on May 10th, many March test takers are already planning to repeat the test in May and/or June. Best of luck to all students, and congratulations on being the first group ever to take the new, redesigned SAT. We will continue the conversation as additional information, facts and findings become available. Please feel free to share your thoughts! As always, we love hearing from you!Overall Test Impressions and Student Reactions “There weren’t as many questions that were trying to trick you… It was pretty straightforward.” Aidan P.“I liked it better than the old one for sure! This SAT was way more applicable to what we’ve been learning in school. I had actually seen one of the English passages in school, and worked on it with my English tutor!”I feel good. There was a lot of reading, but I used the strategies we learned in our sessions to get through it. Knowing the test structure and how to eliminate wrong answer choices really helped. Zack H.I thought the SAT was really straightforward and the actual questions were just like the practice questions we went over in SAT prep.Im so happy I knew how to guess and fill in the bubble sheets! That really messed up some of my friends. Emily B. (MA)The No Calculator section was so hard but I knew it would be from the practice tests we went over in our sessions. Lol! Gracie G.It felt just like the practice tests I took at AJ. It was funny because the same friends that took the AJ practice tests with me on Saturday mornings were there on the real test day at the same time! Laura M.I was really happy that I did tutoring when I was sitting there with the test in front of me. I could just start answering questions instead of thinking really hard and wasting time. Julie L. (SHP Junior)You were right about plug-in and backsolve! AND guessing!” Sam M. (MA Junior)“I think it helped a lot. He helped give me strategies to make it go faster.”Additional Information:According to the College Board, 463,000 students took the redesigned SAT on March 5th, 2016.The College Board conducted a sur vey of 8,089 students who completed the March SAT administration and compared the results on some questions to a survey after the March 2015 administration with the old version of the test. Among the results from the new survey:71 percent of students said the test reflected what they’re learning in school.By a 6 to 1 margin, students said they preferred the format of the new SAT over the previous version of the test.
